6 Steps to Setting Goals for 2014

Setting goals 2014It is the time of the year again to look at what we have achieved and what we have not achieved. And for some this may be stressful , specially if you realize that you have not achieved everything or anything of what you wanted to achieve.

But it is no time to start crying over spilled milk. Whatever you have or have not done  is done, but you can change anything and everything at any time.

If you have not achieved your goals, it would be good to reflect on why you did not achieve it. Be honest with yourself. We can find excuses for anything and everything. I am good at finding excuses, but at the end of the day what is important is if I have achieved or not achieved.

Achieving a goal does not have to be a life changing thing. Your life does not need to change completely. Some people have small gaols, and they are happy with that. Others want to achieve bigger things and that is also fine.

So no matter where you are right now, a new year is starting soon, and it is best to start on the right track.  Whether you want to set completely new goals or revisit old ones there are some steps that you need to take to be able to achieve your goals.

1-      Before you set any goals, analyse where you are and accept what it is. There is no point in beating yourself up for things that you could have done. Just accept what it is. To accept what it is, you need to achieve a calmness about it. Yes, you did not achieve what you wanted, you may have procrastinated, or excused yourself, or perhaps wasted time. That is part of the past, and the past has nothing to do with what you can achieve in the future. Your past is your past.  Now is time to move on.

2-      Be very clear on what goals you want to set, and the timeline to achieve them.  By the way,  do not get put off by small goals. If your goal is just to lose 10 pounds, then great. If your goal is to double or triple your income, great. The point is to embrace your goal and know exactly what it is.

3-      Have a huge Why for your goal. Find out why exactly you want to achieve that goal. What does it mean to you? Your why needs to be something very big to keep you motivated. If you do not have a huge and critical why, chances are that you may give up when the first challenge presents itself. And let me tell you that you may encounter several challenges.  Whenever I did not have a huge why I gave up immediately. But whenever I have a WHY then I will find a way.

4-      Discipline yourself. .Discipline is the key to achieving goals, and yet many of us struggle with discipline.  If you do not have the discipline to do what you need to do to achieve your goal , then it will be hard to achieve it.  One of the best ways of mastering self discipline is by being accountable to someone else.  By being accountable to someone else, you will feel more responsible and will be more encouraged to do what you need to do.

5-      Drink and eat your goal every day. I was tempted to say that you do not need to be obsessed with your goal, but actually obsession will help you to achieve your set goal. You need to think about your goal every day,  and take a step every day that will bring you closer to your dream.  

6-      Asses your journey every week. Every week, you need to assess where you stand and where you want to be. By doing this you will be able to assess if you are on track or not. If you got off the track, you can always come back. By doing it weekly, you will be bale to come back on track easily.
