Power Naps: Benefits of having a power nap
Power Nap or Nano Nap is when you sleep about 20 minutes during the day. Dr Henshaw explains the benefits of power naps in the video below.
She says that power naps are:
• A refresher
• a stress buster
• They improve concentration
• But she stresses that we need to take the power nap at the right time.
• the best time to power nap is between 2 and 4 pm after lunch when the digestive system has slowed down.
• the energy is higher between 7 am and 12pm and between 6:pm and 8:pm so the body will not want to go to sleep at that time.
She also explains that here are different stages of sleep. If your power nap lasts about 20 minutes most probably you will only be in stage 1 and 2 of sleep, and you will wake up refreshed and alert. But if you sleep and wake up in stages 3 and 4 which are deep sleep you will wake up tired and confused.
The video also mentions the caffeine nap, which is a short nap after drinking coffee. Since caffeine and coffee takes about 30 minutes to take effect then it is ideal to have a power nap just after a coffee. When you wake up you will have the energy of the coffee plus the energy of the power nap.
